Diagnostic Scan Tools for Automobiles
Today's automobile manufacturers are going the hi-tech way, installing multiple gizmos to enhance the efficiency and comfort offered by their vehicle. More advanced diagnostic scan tools display sensor values, system data and conduct self-tests such as testing fuel pump, EVAP leaks, A/C compressor clutch, etc. They fall in two main categories: PC-based and PDA-based.
Typically, the former have large screens and in-built diagnostic software that can be easily updated. They can erase stored diagnostic information, display real-time parameters, record data and also offer customized graphs and printable reports. In addition, PC-based diagnostic scan tools can access manufacturer-specific data.
They also cost much lesser than their stand-alone, PDA-based counterparts, which, in spite of providing the benefit of portability, offer only minimalistic functionality. On the other hand, the more professional of PDA-based hand tools have better, color displays and also allow data to be captured for later analysis. They are also relatively simpler to use and cost lesser.
Diagnostic scan tools are available in a range of prices and sizes and contain software that can be easily upgraded. For DIY enthusiasts, an advanced hand-held tool can save time and money spent in visiting mechanics.
Unlike in the past, diagnostic scan tools have become very affordable and portable over the last decade or so.
